The court rejected the bail application of the Director General of Fake Bodies, PFIPC, Adeyemi

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday rejected the bail application filed by the controversial Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), Adeniyi Adeyemi.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu who gave the order while ruling on a fundamental rights lawsuit filed on behalf of Adeyemi refused to grant requests for release, bail and access to medical treatment without first hearing from the respondents.

But he ordered the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation to give his lawyers access to detainees.

The court ordered the IGP, police and AGF to show cause within 72 hours why the remaining relief sought by Adeyemi was not granted, and adjourned the matter to September 9 for the defendant to show cause.

Adeyemi has asked for six reliefs, including an order ordering the defendants to release him from custody and grant him bail pending the resolution of his lawsuit.

He is also seeking an order granting him access to a medical practitioner of his choice, as well as an order prohibiting police from interrogating him or obtaining any statements from him without his attorney present.

Meanwhile, the sixth relief in its ex parte application seeks “an order that, while the applicant remains in custody, the respondent allows the applicant unimpeded access to a legal practitioner of his choice at reasonable hours.”

The court granted the relief, and ordered that Adeyemi be allowed to see his lawyer at reasonable hours while in custody.

Adeyemi was arrested in Osun State in July after the Federal High Court, Abuja, issued an arrest warrant for his failure to appear at an arraignment.

He faces eight charges that include allegations of forgery, fraud and impersonation over his claim to be the Director General of the PFIPC, an agency the Presidency does not recognize as “fake.”

Prosecutors accused Adeyemi of forging an appointment letter purportedly issued by President Bola Tinubu and signed by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and other official documents.

Adeyemi denied the allegations and stated that the council existed.

Judge Mohammed Umar had previously ordered security agencies to arrest and bring him to court on September 30 for trial after he repeatedly failed to appear in court.
