The court sets May 8 to hear the case challenging Jonathan’s 2027 eligibility

The Federal High Court in Abuja has set May 8 to hear a case seeking to bar former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential elections.

The case, which was mentioned, was adjourned by Judge Peter Lifu for hearing on the merits.

Judge Lifu ordered that hearing notices be issued and served on all defendants, who are yet to file their responses to the case.

The court emphasized the need for adequate legal procedures before the next hearing.L

The case was brought by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who is seeking a court order to bar Jonathan from running in the 2027 election.

The plaintiff also asked the court to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting Jonathan’s nomination from any political party.

The suit lists:

* Goodluck Jonathan as the first defendant

* INEC as 2nd respondent

* The Attorney General of the Federation as the 3rd defendant

Plaintiff argues that Jonathan is constitutionally ineligible to run again based on the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

He cited sections related to term limits, arguing that Jonathan has already completed the maximum term allowed for a president.

Jonathan first assumed office in 2010 following the death of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, completing his remaining term.

He was subsequently elected and served a full term starting in 2011.

The plaintiff argues that a new bid in 2027 would exceed constitutional limits on tenure.

The lawsuit was filed in what the plaintiff described as an attempt to protect constitutional integrity and uphold the rule of law.

He warned that allowing Jonathan to contest could create a constitutional violation and set a controversial precedent.
