President Bola Tinubu approved the immediate release of n15 billion to mitigate the impact of the undertaken floods, following the warnings of climatic experts.
Vice -president Kashim Shettimo revealed the development on Wednesday while talking in a seminar on monitoring and coordination of the risk of flood held at the National Counter Terrorism Center in Abuja.
Shettimo said that the president has directed ministries, departments and relevant agencies to intensify collaboration and distribute resources to avoid the expected disaster.
He observed that Tinubu was busy working with development partners to exploit technical skills, financial support and operational skills in curling the threat.
“Only last year, the floods hit over five million people, they churned out 2.3 million Nigerians, destroyed over 450,000 hectares of agricultural land and forced 1.2 million children outside the school,” Shettimo said.
“This is not a scenario for the academic debate. It is our reality. The victims represent all of us, our future and a national economy under tension.”
He denounced the previous reactive approach of the country to the climate -induced disasters, underlining the need for timely and proactive strategies.
Even speaking, the national security councilor, Nuhu Ribadu, announced the formation of a task force to prevent the impending crisis, underlining the importance of early alarm systems and quick response.
Urged the parties interested in working together to achieve the seminary’s objectives, describing it as a matter of national interest
