Troops rescue 360 kidnapping victims in Borno, two newborns die during operation

Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) troops have rescued around 360 abducted people from a Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) hideout in the Mandara Mountains area of southern Borno state, in what the military described as one of the most significant hostage rescue operations in recent times.

The operation, conducted by Special Forces and Sector 1 troops, followed weeks of intelligence gathering, covert reconnaissance and coordinated operational planning aimed at dismantling rebel networks in the area.

According to a statement released on Sunday by OPHK Acting Media Information Officer, Haruna Sani, the rescued victims – including men, women and children – were released from captivity under harsh and inhumane conditions after being abducted from several communities, particularly around Ngoshe axis in Borno State.

Sani said the troops acted on credible intelligence that pinpointed the location of the hostages and identified rebel support structures propping up the enclave.

He explained that the operation involved a multi-axis assault designed to isolate the target area, block escape routes and prevent reinforcements, with the support of real-time intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance feeds.

“Acting on confirmed intelligence, OPHK Special Forces and Sector 1 troops launched a meticulously coordinated operation to dominate key terrain and prevent rebel withdrawal or reinforcement,” the statement said.

The troops reportedly achieved tactical surprise, overrunning the hideout before the insurgents could mount an organized response. According to the military, several fighters fled into the surrounding mountainous terrain, while others surrendered.

After the attack, the rescued victims were immediately secured, medically screened and evacuated to safer locations to receive urgent humanitarian assistance.

However, the military confirmed that two children died during the operation, due to exhaustion and severe hardship endured during prolonged captivity and difficult travel over rough terrain.

The statement describes the mission as a “major operational success” and a major blow to terrorist elements operating in the region.

The JAS rebel group is a separatist faction linked to Boko Haram, which has suffered attacks and kidnappings in parts of north-eastern Nigeria for over a decade.

Military authorities praised the troops for their professionalism, discipline and courage, adding that the success underlines the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and interagency coordination in ongoing counterinsurgency efforts.

Operation Hadin Kai continues to conduct ground and air operations against rebel groups in the region, where sporadic attacks and mass abductions persist despite years of military campaigns.
