Wike said the NBA has become partisan

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) of abandoning its role as an impartial defender of justice and the rule of law, alleging that the association has become partisan.

Wike, a lawyer, made the claim on Wednesday in his monthly media chat with journalists.

He emphasized that actions that could damage the justice system must remain a public concern.

Wike criticized the NBA’s leadership, accusing the body of taking a political position rather than maintaining the neutrality expected of a professional association.

He said the NBA, historically considered a leading voice in defense of constitutionalism and the rule of law, must refuse to be drawn into partisan politics.

Wike added: “The NBA is now taking sides politically. They are now a political party.”

He added that professional bodies must be careful not to give the impression that they are supporting particular political interests or candidates.

Wike also slammed his predecessor, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, saying his past actions in office had raised questions about his suitability for the office of Vice President.

He said Nigerians should critically examine the records of political leaders seeking elective office, especially those who portray themselves as defenders of democracy and constitutionalism.

He said the actions of political leaders in the past should not be ignored just because they sought higher political office.

Wike said: “Rotimi Amaechi, who wants to be Vice President today, once closed down a court in Rivers State and caused a pregnant woman to give birth in prison.

“Whoever did that and is now talking about being Vice President, Nigerians have to ask questions.”

The minister argued that anyone seeking to occupy a sensitive executive position must have a record that reflects respect for democratic institutions, especially the judiciary.
