Nigeria joins the United Nations to mark the 80th anniversary

On Monday Nigeria joined other Member States to mark the 80th anniversary of the United Nations Foundation.

Vice -president Kashim Shettimo was among the world leaders who participated in the high -level meeting that commemorated the 80th anniversary of the global organism.

Nigeria was admitted as a United Nations Member State on October 7, 1960, having obtained independence a week earlier on October 1st.

The United Nations commemorated the 80th anniversary with music, memories and messages of peace from the Member States at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The ceremony took place when the world leaders arrived in New York, the United States (USA) for the annual debate in the historical chamber, which was obscured and wet of Blue Light for the Milestone event.

The president of the Baert’s Annalena Assembly recalled how the United Nations were founded in the aftermath of two world wars and “the unspeakable horrors of the Holocaust”, at a time when 72 territories were still under colonial domain.

The signature of the United Nations Charter on June 26, 1945 “was a leader’s promise to their peoples and nations to each other, that humanity had learned from his darker chapters,” he said.

Still, “the hours feel once again”, with crisis in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and Haiti, together with “non -filtered online hatred”.

“While we mark 80 years of our United Nations, we are once again standing at a crossroads,” Baertbock said to the delegates.

“We cannot take the easy path and simply give up. We have to choose the right path; to show the world that we can be better together,” he said, echoing his theme for this reference session of the General Assembly.

Even the secretary of the United Nations Antonio Guterres returned to the first days of the organization, noting that many of the first members and delegates of the staff “brought visible wounds from the war”.

These people were not idealistic but had seen the worst of humanity and knew that “peace is the most courageous, more practical, more necessary research than all,” he said.

“In building the United Nations, they created something extraordinary. A place where all nations – large and small – could meet to solve the problems that no country can solve alone.”

The Secretary General warned that “the principles of the United Nations are under aggression as never before”.

“While we meet, civilians are targeted and international law is trampled,” he said.

“Furthermore, poverty and hunger are increasing while progress to achieve sustainable development objectives (SDG) falter, while the climate crisis anger.

“At the same time, we are moving towards a multipolar world,” he added.

“To face these challenges, we must not only defend the United Nations, but strengthen them.”

He urged the international community “to go up to this moment clearly, courage and conviction” and “to create the promise of peace”.
