In football, some heroes make headlines, while others quietly build the foundations of success. For Barau FC, that silent force is Chisom Chiaha, a goalkeeper whose brilliance has become the backbone of the team’s impressive second stanza in the NPFL.
Chisom Chiaha, former Nigerian U-17 and U-20 international, has once again stepped into the spotlight, not with noise, but with performances, his numbers speak louder than words.
In just 11 games between the sticks, he recorded an incredible 8 clean sheets, conceding just 3 goals, showing a rare level of consistency for goalkeepers in a competitive league like the NPFL, even more remarkable is where some of those clean sheets come from.
Five of them came from away matches against strong opposition teams, including Enyimba FC, Bendel Insurance, Warri Wolves, Wikki Tourist and Rangers International. For those who are familiar with these teams, they know that these are not just teams, they are battlefields where experience and composure are tested, but indeed Chisom has passed every test.
The only goals conceded came against Niger Tornadoes at home, then against Rivers United and against Kano Pillars away, a testament to how difficult it was to break him down.
With his current performance, Chisom first gained national recognition in 2015 and 2016 as part of Nigeria’s victorious Under-17 World Cup team alongside stars such as Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze in 2015. Then earning a place in Nigeria’s Under-20 team in 2016, he returned to the spotlight.
Although his brief return to prominence came in 2023 with Heartland FC, where he played a key role in their unbeaten run in the NNL, securing promotion to the NPFL and winning the best goalkeeper award in the NNL.
Now at Barau Football Club, following his move from Bayelsa United, Chisom has elevated his game to a new level, his performances have not only stabilized the team but also attracted the attention of scouts, clubs and agents both within and outside Nigeria.
Despite the growing interest, the marriage between Chisom and Barau FC appears to have just begun and may last long as both parties are simply enjoying their honeymoon.
