Ghana takes lead in pre-Commonwealth Games friendly

Ghana took an early lead over Nigeria after securing a 4-3 lead in a pre-Commonwealth Games international boxing friendly held in Accra on Thursday night.

The pre-event featured seven full bouts in the men’s and women’s divisions, with the hosts topping the competition thanks to dominant performances in the men’s division.

Nigeria started brightly in the women’s category as Kadijat Ajisola defeated Ghana’s Ramatu Quaye 5-0 in the bantamweight (-54kg) competition.

Aishat Gbadamosi also gave the visitors another victory after beating Nancy Bamfo 3-2 in the featherweight (-57kg) fight.

However, Ghana responded strongly in the men’s events. Amadu Mohammed recorded a unanimous 5-0 victory over Michael Ogunremi in the bantamweight (-55kg) division, while Ebenezer Ankrah also recorded a 5-0 victory against Sodiq Oduniyi in the lightweight (-60kg) category.

Abdul Wahid Omar further extended Ghana’s lead with a narrow 3-2 point victory over Abdul Rahman Abdul Wahab in the light welterweight (-65kg) clash.

Nigeria’s Folly Hassan reduced the deficit after defeating Khalid Abdul 3-2 in the light heavyweight (-70kg) fight, but Ghana sealed the overall lead when Desmond Pappoe defeated Daniel Joshua 4-1 in the light heavyweight (-80kg) fight.

Nigerian Blessing Orakwe did not compete after her Ghanaian opponent failed to show up for the friendly tournament.

The friendly is part of preparations for upcoming international competitions, including upcoming Commonwealth Games qualifiers and continental boxing events.
