Storm takes down 330 kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line as TCN declares force majeure
Abuja (Core Reporters) — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared a force majeure event on the 330 kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line following the collapse of a transmission tower along the corridor.
The incident occurred at around 10.44pm on Monday 7 September 2026, when the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line tripped. A test re-closure was attempted at 11.07pm, but the line tripped again.
After the second trip, linemen from TCN’s Birnin Kebbi sub-region began a fault-finding patrol along the transmission corridor.
On Tuesday 8 September the team discovered that the T367 tower had collapsed.
Preliminary findings indicate that the tower collapsed due to strong winds and thunderstorms in the area.
The accident affected electricity transmission through the 330 kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission corridor. As a result, TCN declared force majeure on the transmission line, citing the natural disaster that caused the damage.
The company said it has initiated arrangements to mobilize necessary personnel, equipment and other resources in the affected location to facilitate the rehabilitation of the collapsed tower and restore the transmission line to service in the shortest possible time.
Meanwhile, TCN said it has successfully maintained electricity transmission in Sokoto by allowing the Talata Mafara-Sokoto corridor to receive supply through an alternative transmission route from the Kaduna-Mando axis via the 132 kV Zaria-Funtua-Gusau transmission line.
TCN regretted the inconvenience that the development may cause to electricity consumers and other stakeholders affected by the accident, assuring the public that every effort will be made to restore normal electricity transmission service as quickly as possible.
