Adewole Adebayo has once again emerged as the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2027 elections.
Adebayo is also the party’s flag bearer in the 2023 presidential election, ranking 16th out of 18 candidates running.
Adebayo emerged via consensus agreement at the SDP national convention held in Bauchi on Saturday.
The party chairman in Lagos submitted a motion to adopt Adebayo as the consensus candidate at the event and all state chairmen also individually submitted motions to the crowd, the majority of which supported Adebayo.
While speaking, the Chair of the Convention, Prof. Usman Bugaje, praised the participants across the country, while urging them to remain loyal to the party. He criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Judiciary for what he described as “tools in the hands of unscrupulous politicians”.

He said the party had survived in a “hostile environment in which all opposition parties are struggling to survive and thrive. We are all well aware of the existing challenges: national institutions such as the judiciary and democratic institutions such as INEC have become tools in the hands of unscrupulous politicians, who toss them around like chess pieces.
“The ruling party’s attempt to block political space and eliminate competition and opposition is the most reprehensible offense of our time.
“Those in the ruling party, INEC and the judiciary who aided and abetted this crime appear to have not only lost character, but also lost history.”
Bugaje added that “only a quarter of a century ago, the late General Abacha with all his military might and ruthless characters like his chief security officer did what they could, arrested whoever they could, killed whoever they could; but did not get what they wanted. They apparently had no mind to understand the lessons of history, because those who helped and abated ended their lives in disgrace. God is watching.
“Nigerians are watching and praying, and history records your despicable behavior and there are consequences either here or there or both. For us there is no turning back, we believe that doing what is right at the right time, is the right thing to do. To do otherwise is to play with God and of course the Almighty is up to it,” he said.
