No less than 50 people, including the soldiers, were feared killed on Friday evening when Boko Haram’s terrorists launched a new attack on Darul Jamal, a community recently re -set in the area of the local government of Bama in the state of Borno.
The residents said the insurgents stormed the village around 9:00 pm and operated until dawn, targeting the unsuspecting and travelers.
Several victims were among the internally displaced resetting (IDP) previously hosted at the field of the Bama Government Scientific School.
A source said that about 56 civilians and five soldiers lost their lives in the attack, although the exact figure of victims remains unclear. Another account said that many residents are still missing.
“Over 20 houses and 10 buses were also burned. Among those killed there were seven pilots and six bama and maiduguri workers who were helping to reconstruct the village,” added the source.
A high government officer in Borno, who did not want to be appointed, confirmed that 59 people were killed and seven bodies have already been taken to Maiduguri for burial.
“It is discouraging. The terrorists operated for hours without resistance. I have been told that they even spent the night in the village. We have to wake us up; the military must take the fight for them. We have just lost 59 souls: it’s sad,” he complained about the official.
In a separate development, the Nigerian aeronautics said that its aerial component of the Operation Hadin Kai neutralized over 30 Boko Haram fighters during coordinated air attacks on Darul Jamal.
Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, spokesman for the NAF, revealed it in a statement on Saturday, noting that the strikes were conducted after reporting heavy attacks of insurgents to the troops in the area.
According to him, the crew identified the terrorists on the run after confirming the position of friendly forces and performed three subsequent strikes, killing more than 30 insurgents.
The reinforcement troops later arrived to secure the area.
The declaration stressed that the operation underlined the effectiveness of the air and land missions joined in the anti-terrorism campaigns and reaffirmed the army’s commitment to dismantle terrorist networks, protect communities and restore peace in the north-east.
