The rapid growth of digital technology has created new ways for people to access Quran recitation, Islamic learning, and religious content beyond traditional learning centers.
For Gwani Aminu Gangaran, whose legal name is Al Hassan Al Amin, the digital transition represents an extension of a journey that began in the traditional Qur’anic education system.
After years of studying the Quran, memorizing and handwritten Quranic work, Gangaran has increasingly turned to digital platforms to share his recitations and aspects of his knowledge with a wider audience, embarking on a path that has gradually moved from the Tsangaya to social media and mobile technology.
Its journey into the digital space began around 2014, when it first appeared on Facebook. At the time, however, he was not operating as a professional content creator, with his presence largely limited to photographs and occasional videos recorded at Qur’anic gatherings, religious events, and activities involving his teachers and fellow students.
A major change came in 2022 when he joined TikTok and created an Instagram account. Although his Instagram posts initially attracted little engagement, he continued to develop his online presence rather than abandon the platforms, gradually exploring ways to present his religious background to a wider audience.
A significant turning point came in 2024, when Gangaran deliberately began recording and publishing his Qur’anic recitations online. This move gave his digital presence a clearer identity, moving from simply appearing in photographs and videos to creating content centered around his recitation of the Quran.
His background in traditional Qur’anic education provided the foundation for the new direction. After spending years studying in the Tsangaya system, memorizing the Quran and undertaking handwritten Qur’anic transcription, recitation became a natural way for him to continue sharing his engagement with the Quran through digital media.
Gangaran’s activities subsequently went beyond traditional social media platforms with the development of a mobile application, “Aminu Gangaran”, currently available on the Google Play Store. The application contains his complete Qur’anic recitation, providing users with a dedicated platform through which they can listen to his recitations.
The app represents an important step in his digital journey because it places his recitation of the Quran outside the ever-changing environment of social media feeds. Instead of relying entirely on platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, the app provides its audience with a direct means of accessing its acting.
The development of the application also reflects the changing ways in which knowledge and recitation of the Quran are shared. While traditional Qur’anic education has historically relied on face-to-face teaching, memorization, repetition, and direct interaction between students and teachers, digital technology now allows recitations and teaching materials to reach audiences far beyond traditional learning centers.
Gangaran’s journey thus brings together two different environments: an education rooted in the traditional Tsangaya system and a modern method of reaching audiences through smartphones, social media platforms and mobile applications.
In addition to the app, he maintains accounts on several social media platforms, becoming one of the platforms through which he has developed a larger audience, while his Instagram activity has also become more consistent after initially attracting limited engagement. He subsequently became more active on Snapchat, where he had previously maintained an account without regularly posting content.
Reciting the Quran remains an important part of Gangaran’s digital identity, but his background also includes knowledge associated with Ilmin Falaki, or traditional Islamic knowledge related to astronomy and the stars. He has also studied Ruqya/Rukiyya, verses and supplications from the Quran, as well as the traditional Ilmin Magani, although he does not currently practice Ruqya. These areas are part of the broader traditional educational context from which its public identity developed.
The current Android version of the Aminu Gangaran application is available on the Google Play Store, while an iOS version is planned for a future release.
His journey from the traditional Qur’anic classroom, through handwritten manuscripts and recorded recitations, to social media and a dedicated mobile application, demonstrates how traditional Qur’anic learning can find new avenues through modern technology, connecting an ancient educational tradition with the rapidly evolving world of digital communication.
