June 12: Obasa reaffirms faith in democracy, Renewed Hope agenda and calls for peace in the APC

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa, has reaffirmed his implicit faith in Nigeria’s democratic odyssey and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s major agenda of renewed hope. He also called for calm and rapprochement with the All Progressives Congress, APC, as Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day.

In a Democracy Day statement signed by Adeshina Oyetayo, his Special Adviser on Research, Media and Documentation, President Obasa says June 12 remains a momentous date in the annals of Nigeria because it symbolizes the resilience and commitment of the Nigerian people to popular sovereignty.

“I extend warm congratulations to fellow citizens at home and in the diaspora and to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Every June 12 remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices of our heroes of the past and the enduring resilience of Nigerians in defending freedom, justice and democratic values.

“This day commemorates the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes. Twenty-seven years into our Fourth Republic, we reaffirm our unshakable faith in democratic governance as the best path to national development and individual prosperity,” he said.

Speaker Obasa says the President’s personal journey and sacrifices to enthrone democracy in Nigeria inform his bold leadership in guiding the nation through economic reforms, global economic hardships and inherited structural challenges.

“With Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, our nation continues to make steady strides towards economic renewal, improved governance and national unity. Now it is up to all of us to continue to support the Renewed Hope Agenda through which the President is building a stronger economy where businesses can thrive, opportunities are expanded and the dividends of democracy reach every corner of Nigeria.”

The President also urged members of the APC, particularly in Lagos, to embrace calm and reconciliation in the aftermath of the primaries, which had sparked protests in some parts of Lagos and other areas over alleged candidate imposition and irregularities.

“Party primaries are races, not wars,” he said. Therefore, “We must prioritize internal cohesion, dialogue and mutual respect. Let us resolve differences through democratic means, strengthen our structures and remain focused on providing good governance to Nigerians. A united APC will not only consolidate democratic gains, but will also position the party to continue to drive national progress and stability.”

“Our focus must remain on the bigger picture, which is consolidating power in 2027 to continue the transformation work started by President Tinubu.” Spokesman Obasa concluded.
