Meta takes strict action against Iranian hackers on WhatsApp

American tech conglomerate Meta has cracked down on an Iranian hacking group on messaging platform WhatsApp targeting the upcoming US elections.

The company said in a statement Monday that it had disabled WhatsApp accounts connected to a “small cluster of possible social engineering activity” on the platform.

IMeta revealed that it has traced the activity back to APT42, also known as UNC788 and Mint Sandstorm.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has previously linked APT42 to phishing attempts targeting individuals in the Trump and Harris camps.

The statement read: there was suspicious behavior on WhatsApp that “attempted to target individuals in the United States, United Kingdom, Israel, Palestine, and Iran.

“In addition, these attacks appear to have focused on diplomats and political figures, including those with ties to both presidential candidates.”
