Nigeria dismantles the terrorist group Ansaru, arrests two best leaders – Thage

Two terrorist pins of the Ansaru group, Mahmud Muhammad Usman, aka Abu Bara’a/Abbas/Mukhtar, and his deputy, Mahmud al-Nigeri, aka Mallam Mamuda, were arrested by the security forces during high-risk intelligence operations.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nhu Ribadu, revealed it on Saturday while he informed journalists on the recent successes recorded by Nigeria in the current efforts to definitely free the country of terrorist groups.

“Today, I am happy to inquire that we successfully concluded a high-risk operation, led by intelligence and anti-terrorism, which led to the capture of the maximum leadership of Jama’Atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi-Biiladis Sudan, commonly known as Ansaru, Nigeria, the affiliate of Al-Qaeda. The two men, who are currently in custody at the level of an interior level.

The two men, who were in the refined list of the security forces, were arrested during a targeted operation, conducted between May and July 2025.

According to NSA, both men have jointly guided more attacks on civilians, security forces and critical national infrastructures.

Ribadu said Usman, Ansaru’s self -produced Emir, is the coordinator of various dormant terrorist cells throughout Nigeria, and also the mind of numerous high -profile kidnappings and armed robberies used to finance terrorism over the years.

He added that Al-Nigeri, the proclaimed head of the staff and deputy of Abu Bara, is the leader of the so-called “Mahmudawa” cell that was hiding in the national park and around Kainji, between the states of the Niger and Kwara to the Benin Republic.

Trained in Libya between 2013 and 2015 in foreign jihadist instructors from Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, Mamuda is a specialist in the management of weapons and in the IED manufacture.

Ribadu also explained that the Ansaru group, that emerged as a faction chipped by Boko Haram, positioning himself as a “human alternative”, It was formed for the first time in January 2012 with a public declaration in Kano. However, according to NSA, his declared goal quickly aimed at attacking Nigerian security agents, civil communities and government infrastructures.

“The group publicly showed the Sun Sun Sunset of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), reporting its ideological and operational alignment with global jihadist movements,” he said.

Ribadu added that Ansaru had rooted over the years both in urban dormant cells and in forest enclaves, through different cities of northern Nigeria and in the forest -based enclaves in particular around the Kainji National Park, between the states of the Niger and Kwara and the Republic Benina.

According to NSA, some of the group’s operations include the prison of the Kuje prison in 2022, the attack on the Niger Uranium structure, the 2013 kidnapping of the French engineer, Francis Colmp, in Katsina and the kidnapping of May 1, 2019 of Alhaji Musa Uba (Magajin Garin Daura).

“They were also behind the kidnapping of the Emir of Wawa and maintain active ties with terrorist groups throughout the Maghreb, in particular in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso,” he added.

The minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, urged citizens to support the government to make the country safer for growth and economic development. He also urged the media not to be influenced by the propaganda of terrorists, observing that terrorism guides advertising.
