Police clarify alleged killing of final year student in Kogi – THIS UPDATE

The Kogi State Police Command has given a clear update on the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing of a final year student, Andrew Amehson of Nana College of Nursing and Medical Sciences, Ibana Okpo, in Olamaboro Local Government Area of ​​Kogi State.

A statement released by his spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat and made available to journalists in Lokoja at the weekend, said the incident occurred in the early hours of April 26, 2026.

According to the statement: “Following a report received at the Olamaboro Division at around 10.30am on that date, police officers promptly mobilized to the scene.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that at approximately 03:00 hours, a male individual later identified as Andrew Amehson of Okpo allegedly attempted to gain illegal access to the school premises.

“He was subsequently intercepted by security personnel employed by the college while on duty within the premises. During the course of the incident, the individual was allegedly assaulted by the said security personnel.

“He was found unresponsive at the scene by school staff at the time of reporting. He suffered serious injuries and was immediately evacuated to a medical facility, where he was later confirmed dead. The scene was professionally examined by police investigators and relevant exhibits were recovered to assist the ongoing investigation.

“Homicide detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) were dispatched to the crime scene to conduct a thorough and exhaustive investigation into the incident.

“Preliminary findings have revealed the identity of the security personnel involved. However, they are currently at large and efforts are underway to capture them and ensure that they are arrested for proper investigation and prosecution.

“The Command strongly condemns all forms of excessive use of force and mob actions. It reiterates that private security personnel, vigilante groups and similar structures are not authorized to inflict punishment on any individual under any circumstances. Their duties are strictly limited to lawful arrest based on reasonable suspicion and immediate handover to the police for proper investigation.

“Citizens are therefore urged to remain calm and allow the law to take its full course in the interests of justice and due process”

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, PSC, MNI, assured the public of a thorough, transparent and professional investigation into the incident.

He reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to justice, accountability and the protection of human rights.

“The Command further encourages citizens to continue to cooperate with law enforcement and provide any useful information that may assist the ongoing investigations”
