The Nigerian government approved ₦ 68.7bn for the electricity project

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Thursday was approved ₦ 68.7 billion for major electricity projects at universities and teaching hospitals throughout the country.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed this after the FEC meeting, led by Bola Tinubu President in the State Building, Abuja.

He said the projects reflected the government’s determination to ensure a stable electricity supply in vital sectors such as health and education.

The university project, according to the Minister, involves engineering, procurement and construction under the energy program, led by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

He said: “This initiative aims to ease the burden of energy costs at universities and hospitals by providing reliable and good quality electricity.”

Adelabu described the current electricity situation in many institutions as “disturbing” and threats to effective service delivery.

“The lack of stable power supply has created a crisis in several schools and hospitals, with institutions unable to buy local electricity,” he added.

The minister stressed that the power outage and industrial actions have occasionally occurred because of unreliable forces.

Adelabu said similar renewable energy projects had been implemented in several institutions, supported by the World Bank.

He registered the completed project to include the University of Abuja, Niger University (12MW Solar), and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (8MW).

Others are the Nigerian Defense Academy (2.6MW) and Federal Agriculture University, Makurdi, who also use solar power.

The newly approved funding will support electrification in eight additional universities and teaching hospitals throughout the country.

These are the University of Lagos, the University of Ahmadu Bello, Zaria, and the University of Obafemi Awolowo, Ile-sife.

Also includes the University of Nigeria, NSUKKA; Ibadan University with his College University Hospital; and Calabar University.

Federal University, Wukari, is also one of the new beneficiaries.
