We want to beat Nigeria – Zimbabwe coach

Warriors of Zimbabwe head coach Kaitano Tembo has said his team will go out for victory against the Nigerian Super Eagles in the Unity Cup.

Zimbabwe will face the Super Eagles in the first semi-final of the Unity Cup on May 26.

The winner between Zimbabwe and the Super Eagles will face Jamaica or India in the final.

Using Unity Cup to build a solid foundation for the Warriors

Speaking after his team’s first training session, Tembo explained why participating in the Unity Cup is important for the Warriors.

“We have had our first training, we don’t have the full team of players, they are still arriving, but I think so far so good,” Tembo said via ZIFA Handle in X. “We are trying to use this tournament to build a solid foundation in our structure and for the next playoffs.

“Our structure must be based on good discipline, resilience, good attitude and good work ethic among the players and I think I have seen a lot of positive things so far.

“This is an opportunity to also integrate some of the young players to try to give them a chance in the two games we are guaranteed to play.

“We are quite happy with what we have at the moment and I hope we can create a balance in the team.

“I think for us the important thing is to see a lot of positives from the team and we definitely want to win because it allows us to try to make sure we start on a positive note to maintain the result.”

Results of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers between Warriors and Super Eagles

Zimbabwe faced the Super Eagles in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with both qualifier matches ending 1-1 in Kigali and Uyo.

While the Warriors came last in the qualifiers, the Super Eagles finished second behind group leaders South Africa.
