DSS uncovers plot to infiltrate planned #EndBadGovernance protests

The Department of State Services (DSS) has uncovered plans by some elements to infiltrate protests planned by some Nigerians to cause chaos in the country.

DSS Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, Dr. Peter Afunanya, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

A group of Nigerians have planned a nationwide protest titled: β€œEnd Bad Governance” from August 1 to 10 to air their grievances over alleged corruption, insecurity and other problems in the country.

Afunanya said: β€œWhile peaceful protests are a democratic right of citizens, the service has confirmed the nefarious plans of some elements to infiltrate the protests.

β€œThe idea is to use the protests to cause chaos and extreme violence in this country.

β€œHe also identified the reasons behind the protests as political in nature.

β€œThe perpetrators wanted to use the desired outcome of the violence to tarnish the reputation of the federal and regional governments; make them unpopular and pit them against the masses.

β€œThe long-term goal is to achieve regime change, especially at the central level.”

He said his party had also identified, among other things, funding channels, sponsors and collaborators of the plot.

The spokesman blamed the plan for using aggression as a first line of action in dealing with emerging scenarios.

He called for the application of non-kinetic strategies and conflict resolution, including moral persuasion, stakeholder engagement, and other multi-track diplomatic channels.

He said this strategy would prevent planners from realizing undesirable goals.

β€œBased on the above, we appeal to all groups holding demonstrations not to carry out any form of rioting, anarchy, and looting.

β€œGovernments at various levels have routinely outlined their agendas to improve the supposedly difficult economic conditions.

β€œThis service invites potential protesters to listen to the voice of common sense, good conscience, and be patient in dealing with authorities, in the interests of peace,” he added.

He said the call was important considering that violence could result in damage to lives and property, as well as disrupting governance.

Afunanya urged the agitators to use all means available to them to ventilate their grievances without resorting to violence.
