The sheikh Gumi deported to Nigeria while the Saudi authorities stopped the cleric from Hajj – Thage

The Saudi authorities have expelled a famous Islamic scholar based in Kaduna, the sheikh Ahmad Gumi, in Nigeria, preventing his participation in Hajj’s pilgrimage from 2025.

Sheikh Gumi was part of a delegation of Islamic scholars sponsored by the Nigerian commission Hajj (Nahcon) to provide religious services during Hajj.

Gumi arrived in Medina last Saturday, around 10:30 pm aboard an Air Uir flight, together with other clerics. However, he was stopped by Saudi immigration officials at the airport and denied the entrance.

Confirming the development on Monday in a post through his verified Facebook page, Sheikh Gumi said that although the Saudi government issued him a visa, but he was denied the entry into the Medina upon arrival and was subsequently expelled.

“Because of some reasons related to my opinions on world politics, the authorities in Saudi Arabia do not want to be present in Hajj even if they have granted me a visa. I am grateful to the authorities in Nigeria who committed themselves to committing myself with the Saudi authorities on this matter,” said Gumi.

Gumi in recent years has supported dialogue and amnesty for the bandits in Nigeria.

In 2010 the Saudi government arrested and detained the sheikh Gumi for over six months on alleged connections with the Nigerian underwear bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

According to reports, the arrest followed a request by the United States government, whose intelligence discovered the email correspondence between Gumi and Abdulmutallab just before the latter tried to bomb a plane linked to the United States on December 25, 2009.

At the time, Gumi was brought to Jeddah for the first time and later returned to Mecca, where he was placed under home arrest. His liberation came only after the intervention by the Nigerian government.
