Benue Assembly Speaker wins APC ticket for 2027 elections

Benue State House of Assembly Speaker, Mr Alfred Emberga, has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for Makurdii North State Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Announcing the results on Tuesday in Makurdi, the Returning Officer, Mr. Desmond Atov, said Emberga received the highest number of votes in the primary.

Atov said the speaker polled 7,303 votes to beat two contestants, Valentine Gbaka, who got 29 votes, and Stephen Datso, who got 50 votes.

The returning officer declared Emberga the winner of the primaries and returned him as the APC candidate.

Speaking to journalists after the declaration, the speaker praised his constituents for the trust placed in him and vowed to continue delivering on the benefits of democracy.

He said his achievements over the past three years included providing more than 40 boreholes, building and renovating schools, building churches and human resource development initiatives.

“It was not an easy task, but with great support from my constituents, who believe in me and consider me worthy to represent them in 2023, and based on the work they have seen and the efforts I have put in, they decided that I should return to the House again to represent them.

“I am excited. This is a moment of happiness for me, my family, my constituents and my supporters at home who have been impatiently waiting for this day,” he said.

The speaker also described the ongoing APC primaries in the state as a free, fair and transparent process.

Meanwhile, Makurdi Local Government APC Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Dankeji, commended Governor Alia for creating a peaceful atmosphere in making the primaries a success.

He described the primary as peaceful and free of rancor.
